More things I’ve learnt, as a British girl, from my eight months in Canada.
A huge holiday home in the country is called a cottage, even though it doesn’t have a thatched roof, and an actual cottage is called a “pioneer house”
Whether talking Bond or talking phone numbers, you wouldn’t say…
It’s even funnier if you go to Northern Ontario — a cottage is a...

Calculating Your Wait Time
The Robarts Starbucks defies all logic when compared to normal businesses that are run well, so I decided to help you out in determining how long a wait you’ll have when you arrive.
Keep in mind all this would change if they bothered to use more than one cash, but I guess workers who can handle a cash machine are in very short supply when it comes to the Robarts Starbucks.
The equation for...

Been a while since I posted anything.
Things have indeed been better since the start of the year. But still missing - Starbucks employees who can use a cash register. Why is the only one? There could be 5 people working, a line-up out into the seating area, and still there would be only one person working cash.
So, it still stands that you order your coffee, continue to wait in line as some...

Wait in line, get your coffee, continue to wait in line to pay. Wait in line, get your coffee, continue to wait in line to pay. Wait in line, get your coffee, continue to wait in line to pay. Wait in line, get your coffee, continue to wait in line to pay. Wait in line, get your coffee, continue to wait in line to pay.
Rinse, repeat, marvel at the inefficiency and stupidity.
Wednesday January 18, 2012
Well, this year is better than last, there are coffee condiments (vanilla and chocolate), and the coffee stand seems well-stocked most times.
Of course, they still have that stupid system they force you to go through where you wait in line, someone pours your coffee, then you have to keep waiting in line, THEN you are allowed to pay.
I mean, your coffee is RIGHT THERE GETTING COLD, but no, wait...

No coffee condiments, but you already knew that, right?
The mouse-maze is back again, winding around the counter for no real reason. And, it’s a long wait until you’re served, no matter how many people are working behind the counter.
To top it off, once you’ve waited the long wait for your coffee, you’re handed your coffee and told to wait some more in order to pay. Is it...

So, they now have a lovely long maze for us mouse-customers to follow to the cash, where there may be 8 employees working but you’ll still have a hell of a wait no matter what the lineup is like.
Still no - wait for it - coffee condiments at the coffee bar which today only had whole milk and coffee cream. (On a diet? Screw you!) You’d think that with so many employees this kind of...

Asked for pumpkin loaf (‘tis the season!), got poppy seed loaf instead.
Sigh.
Tuesday October 11, 2011
Fresh back from the Thanksgiving weekend, let’s see where we stand with Starbucks in the Robarts library.
There are still large jars of coffee condiments behind the cash, never to make it to the coffee stand, apparently. No cane sugar, either. Guess that’s hard to find.
Wooden stir sticks make a re-appearance, now individually all wrapped in plastic, just like Laura Palmer. No lids...

Large jars of coffee condiments are stacked neatly on a shelf behind the cash, teasing. No coffee condiments at the coffee stand. That would make too much sense.
Also, no wooden stir sticks. Are they really that difficult to keep in stock? Really?
And the napkin dispensers require needle-nose pliers to grab a napkin. Either they aren’t loading the napkins properly, or they’re doing a...

Battled the long lineup of students to once again sample the weird wonder that is the Robarts Starbucks.
Noticed that right behind the counter, there were large jars of coffee condiments - nutmeg, cinnamon, chocolate. So, they do exist!
At the coffee stand though, no condiments, or even napkins for that matter.
I’m starting to think that staff there have major addictions to coffee...

It’s a whole new Starbucks! New counter, equipment, and staff.
Sadly, still no coffee condiments. And my bold was way less than hot.
Sigh.

First day of the school year… and no Starbucks in Robarts Library to fill all those new students with coffee for their long, long registration lineups. Still under construction.

Well, the Robarts Starbucks is missing everything now - it’s closed and under construction until September.
Goodbye, ye old Starbucks, we barely knew ye.
Except that we did, and you sucked.

The coffee stand was a thing of beauty today - no coffee condiments except for a huge container of cinnamon, no half-and-half (or even third-and-third-and-third, thanks Futurama), only one kind of artificial sweetener, coffee lids were mislabeled, no raw sugar, no honey, and it was all messy as hell. Sweet!
Wednesday July 6, 2011
Ah, after a few weeks away in Starbucks Country (read: Vancouver), I’d actually become used to full, fresh coffee stations where I could add any condiment I wanted, there was always every type of milk and cream, and service was prompt.
And now I’m back, sigh. No coffee condiments, 10% cream was empty, and I waited at least 15 minutes for the lone barista to get around to my simple...

Still no coffee condiments, sigh. Perhaps there’s an international embargo on them and they’re $500 a shaker?
My coworker likes the new guy behind the counter though. I think it might be coffee love. She’s strange that way.
Friday, May 20, 2011
No coffee condiments, or raw sugar.
They so thoughtfully provided napkins, though, so there’s always that.
Thursday, May 19, 2011
Hmm, no raw sugar, cinnamon, vanilla, chocolate or nutmeg. No napkins!
Generally, underwhelming.
Wednesday, May 4, 2011
No 10% cream, 18% cream in a carton. Oh how I miss cinnamon in my coffee.
No sign of the the mystery milk, though, I guess that’s an improvement.
New staff, I wonder where all the old staff is? Summer vacation? Barista school? Are they the Navy Seal Team Six?

More Mystery Milk! Is it 10% cream? Is it 18% cream?
I don’t know!
Also, their Bold needs more dog.
Thursday, April 21, 2011
Two words: Mystery Milk!
No label on cream container, so gawd only knows what I just drank.
Friday, April 15, 2011
No sugar, raw or regular. No napkins. But holy crap, there’s cinnamon and the mythical pumpkin spice. Cool your creams, though! Paper cartons just aren’t Starbucks-sexy.

What’s missing is me - never made it down for coffee. Busy day!
Tuesday, April 12, 2011
Wow, Pumpkin Spice! Too bad it’s not Hallowe’en. No chocolate, vanilla, nutmeg or cinnamon, though. No raw cane sugar - regular sugar was in a coffee cup and not a proper sugar dispenser.
Half-and-half was in a carton, not a thermos. No sign of coffee cream.

Wednesday, April 6, 2011
No cinnamon, nutmeg, vanilla or chocolate. No raw cane sugar (aw!), but hey, you’re covered with the three different types of chemical sweeteners. No proper thermoses for the 10% and 18% creams.
Tuesday, April 5, 2011
No grande cup lids - I hear they’re very hard to source. No coffee cream (also near-impossible to find, obviously), cinnamon, nutmeg, vanilla or chocolate. Half-and-half was in a carton, not anything to keep it cool.
No competence at keeping even the basics in stock, still. Tomorrow I bet they’ll ask us to hold out our hands because they’re out of cups entirely.
Friday, April 1, 2011
Everything’s present and accounted for!
Haha, April Fool’s Day. No cinnamon, nutmeg, vanilla or chocolate and both creams are in cartons and not anything to keep it cool and safe.

No half-and-half; coffee cream is in a carton, not thermos. No vanilla, chocolate, cinnamon or nutmeg. Might as well be a Second Cup, wait, Second Cup usually has their shit together.
Edit: Second visit, no more cup sleeves (guess they’re very hard to source), got a doubled cup instead.

No cinnamon, vanilla, chocolate or nutmeg. No coffee cream. Half-and-half was in carton, not a regular dispenser designed to keep creams/milks cool. 2% was empty on second visit.
Edit: Also, the bold really wasn’t. Dishwater is more like it.

No ice! Nor cinnamon, nutmeg, vanilla or chocolate. Vente cup tops seem to be in short supply, too. No napkins earlier in the morning; they mysteriously appeared by late morning. Half-and-half (10%), but no coffee cream (18%).

No wooden stir sticks. No cinnamon, vanilla, chocolate or nutmeg. No cream of any kind (only 2% and skim).
No lineup, got served quickly enough.
